2009 Class Schedule

Japanese Woodblock Printmaking Workshop (Moku Hanga)
Instructor: Mary Brodbeck

Mary Brodbeck Woodblock Print Gallery and Studio - Host
610 W. Willard St., Unit D
Kalamazoo, MI 49007
269-344-6654

Woodblock prints utilize a “relief” printing method. The non-image area is carved away from the surface, and the remaining raised surfaces are painted. Paper placed upon the carved and painted block is then pressed so that the desired image transfers to the paper. The oldest form of printmaking, the relief method accompanied the invention of paper, around 600 AD.

The Japanese developed color woodblock printmaking to an extraordinary degree during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Techniques specific to the Japanese process include the use of brushed-on water-based pigments, “kento” registration, and a handheld “baren” as burnisher. Separate woodblocks are carved and printed for each color. These methods are valued for their timeless, low-tech, and nontoxic simplicity.

Participants in these courses will learn the traditional Japanese methods of color woodblock printmaking.
